Tuesday, June 13, 2023 – Innovation Day

It’s always Innovation Day at Hexagon, but we’re highlighting it big on this first full day of HxGN LIVE Global 2023. You can look forward to sessions, demos, and activities around the topic all morning followed by 100% innovation-related sessions at the Intelligent Mining Summit all afternoon.

7005 – Opening Presentation: How Innovation and Evolution in Mining are Keys to Our Planet’s Future – 1:30PM (PT)

Adam Simon, PhD

Professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Michigan

Co-author of Mineral Resources, Economics and the Environment

with the participation of Rob Daw, Chief Innovation Officer, Hexagon’s Mining division

The mining industry’s ability to extract the vital resources that will power a sustainable future, and to do so safely, without environmental degradation, will be a key part of our success. It will take new and innovative approaches and an evolution in our thinking. It will take creative leadership and the courage to take risks. Our opening presentation by Dr. Simon will propel HxGN LIVE Global Innovation Day with a journey into our collective future, laying out the stakes, and jumpstarting our exploration of the solutions.

7006 – Innovation Ecosystem: New Paradigms for Progress – 1:55pm (PT)

Don Duval, Chief Executive Officer, NORCAT

Leandro Rossi, Executive Director, Mining Hub (O Hub da Mineração)

Dr. Adam Simon, Moderator

It used to be that mining companies developed their own technologies in-house and deployed them in their own mines. However, the digital economy has democratized the R&D process, and many of the most promising innovations are being developed by start-ups. With this recognition, new models are being created that connect innovative startups and entrepreneurs with major mining companies to add dynamism to the whole industry. We’ll talk to the leaders who are creating partnerships that will help us meet the challenges ahead through investment, education, and invention.

Wednesday, June 14, 2023 – Spend the day at the Intelligent Mining Summit

Witness innovation at its finest at our Autonomous Solutions plenary session starting at 10:30am. Technical talks with presenters from around the globe begin at 8:00am for the early risers.

From Mines to Mars: Evolution, Innovation, and Inspiration – 10:30am (PT)

Dr. Adam Steltzner, Leader & Chief Engineer, Mars 2020 Mission, Rover Perserverance, NASA and the Jet Propulsion Lab

Operating a mile underground, a mile underwater, or hundreds of millions of miles beyond our planet requires perfect insight, extraordinary precision, flawless execution and most of all, courageous leadership in the face of challenges. Hear NASA’s Adam Steltzner speak about his fascinating experience with landing spacecraft on Mars, and hear from Hexagon presidents, Maria Luthström (Autonomy & Positioning division) and Nick Hare (Mining division), along with Dr. Adam C. Simon (Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Earth & Environment), as they discuss the role of advanced autonomous technologies in mining and heavy industry.

7012 – Down Under: Standing Up to the Challenges of Underground Mining – 2:30 PM (PT)

Paul Kline, General Manager, Nyrstar

John McVey, Chief Executive Officer, Procon Group

Dr. Adam Simon, Moderator

To keep up with the increasing demand for key metals and minerals, and readily accessible lodes nearing depletion, mining companies must dig deep, literally and figuratively. We will explore how new technologies and innovations are helping operators achieve better results in production and safety underground.

7015 – True Sustainability: What Happens When Mines Close – 4:50 PM (PT)

Andre Marinho, Senior Manager of Economic Advisory, Ernst & Young LLP (EY)

Gustavo Roque, Head of Future Use, Vale

Dr Adam Simon, Moderator

The ancient Greek statesman Pericles said, “What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others.” Inevitably, mines close, but the communities that supported them live on. In this session, we will discuss the need for mining companies to better understand the fabric and culture of the communities where they work, so they can better plan for what happens when a mine closes. As regulators predicate permits on concrete future-use planning, we’ll hear how big mining companies are ensuring economic viability and cultural vibrancy in mining communities, even after the digging stops.
