Exploring the digital mine with Virtual Reality

Guest Blogger, Liann Zimmer, Digital Marketing Intern

Humans are visual creatures; 90% of the information transmitted to the brain is visual, and we process images 60,000 times faster than text. This preference for visual information has changed the way we consume information through improvements in digital and visual imaging.

One of these rising technologies is Virtual Reality, a computer-generated simulation of an environment or 3D image, which is not only a source of processing visual information but allows for physical interaction within the space. This combination of visual and kinesthetic information is just one of many innovative ways in which Hexagon Mining is embracing the trend of digital innovation in the mining industry.

This week at HxGN LIVE in Las Vegas, we are taking mining visuals to the next level with our Virtual Reality Wall. Using the HTC Vive, users can walk through and interact with a virtual mine plan. This gives you the ability to scale in and out of a scanned plan of your mine, and physically walk around the mine area when zoomed into a 1:1 ratio.

Such rising digital technologies have the potential to revolutionize the mining industry. Deloitte discusses how digital technologies in the mining industry allow “companies to rethink the way they generate and process information”. This is exactly what Hexagon Mining strives to achieve as we work with new visual information technologies. Smart technologies allow us to get one step closer to an integrated digital mine, with all the data and information at our fingertips. Additionally, these technologies have the power to reduce the need to be onsite, moving work to more diverse locations and including workers who cannot relocate.

Exploring the mine with Virtual Reality is just one of the many fascinating technologies we are working with. See how else we are shaping smart change at The Zone from June 13 – 16. Check out our showcased technologies that can transform data to reduce costs, improve safety, and increase productivity.
