In South Africa, achieving \u201cZero Harm\u201d<\/a> is more than a slogan, it is a commitment to eliminate safety incidents at mines. At the forefront of this initiative is Anglo American\u2019s Kumba Iron Ore Limited. By introducing new safety technologies at its operations, Kumba is reducing work hazard exposure for mine operators.<\/p>\n

In its 2019 Sustainability Report<\/a>, Kumba outlined how it is using Hexagon\u2019s collision avoidance technology as part of a strategy to reduce risks for operators. The company has already completed a rollout of HxGN MineProtect Collision Avoidance System (CAS) at Sishen to all at-risk heavy mining and services equipment. It has also incorporated HxGN MineProtect Vehicle Intervention System (VIS) as an additional layer of safety.<\/p>\n

Understanding CAS and VIS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Through a cabin display unit, CAS<\/a> protects all mining vehicles, assets, and vehicle operators within 500 meters in open pit mines. The solution provides 360-degree awareness for surrounding vehicles and selected assets, as well as a technology-leading collision avoidance function based on path prediction.<\/p>\n

Integrating VIS<\/a> , a Level-9 collision avoidance system, automatically takes control of the propulsion system of the vehicle in defined situations if the operator does not react appropriately to the warning provided by CAS.<\/p>\n

These solutions can be integrated with other Hexagon technologies to provide even more comprehensive safety coverage.<\/p>\n
