At Hexagon, we firmly believe that safe mining operations equal productive mining operations. Our partnership with PT Archi Indonesia to deploy Hexagon OP Pro and Hexagon Operator Alertness Systems (OAS) at the Tokatindung gold mine in Indonesia is proving once more that a mine focused on safety, innovation, and strong change management practices will see significant productivity gains.
When Tokatindung began mining operations in 2020, operators were using manual forms of communication as fleet management. Shortly after, the mine partnered with Hexagon to deploy OP Pro, a fleet management system that combines hardware and software to automate workflows, optimise haulage and blending, and deliver situational awareness. The mine started seeing significant improvements in productivity within a year of deploying the system, and since then, OP Pro has enabled the mine to achieve a 28% increase in truck productivity.
“Productivity improvements were clear,” said David Prior, Senior Manager – Customer Success, Hexagon. “But even we were impressed by the scale of the impact.” OP Pro has also helped Tokatindung to reduce queue times by 16%, reduce hang time — the time between truck loading and departure — by 4%, and reduce fuel consumption by 31%. These statistics show a real correlation between OP Pro and the value that Tokatindung can extract from their operations day to day.
“I think all mining operations need it,” said Indra Karim, Mining Operation Head, PT Archi Indonesia, of Hexagon OP Pro. “When we are talking about efficient operations, there’s no way we could do mining operations efficiently unless we measure it. With the fleet management system, we get real-time measurements.”
PT Archi Indonesia is dedicated to keeping their miners safe, which is why they also partnered with us to deploy Hexagon OAS, an integrated fatigue and distraction management solution, at Tokatindung. The impact that OAS has had on mine safety has been outstanding, with fatigue-related alerts for truck operators reduced by 79% and zero fatigue-related safety incidents reported since implementing the system three years ago.
“The technology increases the productivity, reduces the operating loss, increases the profitability, increases the mining selectivity, and more importantly, improves safety,” said Vinsent Agus Supriyanto, Mining Group Head, PT Archi Indonesia.
Solutions that boost mine safety and productivity bring significant benefits to mining operations, but building trust and social acceptance for new systems is key to ensuring these technologies deliver the most value. “The impacts are tangible,” wrote Leonida. “Production and mining selectivity have increased. Fuel consumption, emissions and material losses have decreased. Workers are safer. And perhaps, most importantly, the mine has become an even stronger anchor in its local community.”
