Thurnau Professor of Earth & Environmental Sciences at the University of Michigan, and his work focuses on the global flow of energy and mineral resources with an emphasis on the geologic availability of energy critical metals. Co-author of two books and author of seventy papers, Dr. Adam Simon has done research and given lectures on all seven continents and is the recipient of the University of Michigan Provost’s Teaching Innovation Prize.

Hexagon Mining division’s CIO Rob Daw spoke with Fortune’s senior editor-at-large Geoff Colvin about the world’s first autonomous road train, how this milestone was achieved, and how it will impact the future of supply chain operations. We also heard about what the future of autonomy in mining will look like, what we’ve learned so far, and how the sensors, systems, and technology have improved.
Panelists Abraham Jalbout, Ph.D., CEO of Auxilium Technology Group, Inc. and Priscilla Nelson, Ph.D., Professor at Colorado School of Mines asked important questions about how to move the mining industry towards net-zero, and discussed changing the way people look at mine tailings and how we might be able to repurpose them in the future. They also talked about new ways to manage mining waste, and how to create value from it. The technologies and resources needed to build a sustainable future rely heavily on mined materials. Our panelists touched on the solutions and innovations needed to provide those materials as safety and efficiently as possible.
The mining industry is working towards a diverse and inclusive future, and our panelists Jamile Cruz, Founder and CEO of I&D 101, Amanda Adams, Former President of Women in Mining Denver, and Moe Momayez, Interim Department Head of Mining and Geological Engineering, University of Arizona came together to discuss who will make up the mining industry’s workforce in the future. They spoke about how to improve messaging around the mining industry to attract top talent and digital natives, and they also discussed how important it is to encourage and support more women to join the industry.
